Dean Jones: Ruben Amorim a serious contender to replace Pochettino at Chelsea
Chelsea’s search for a new manager has led them to consider Sporting CP head coach Ruben Amorim as a serious candidate to replace Mauricio Pochettino.
Journalist Dean Jones revealed that the Blues have been keeping a close eye on Amorim for a significant period, noting that the Portuguese manager could be a sensible choice for the Stamford Bridge hot seat.
Dean Jones on GivemeSports:
“I was always told that while Kieran McKenna is a leading candidate, others were still in the frame. I have been starting to hear Ruben Amorim’s name mentioned more throughout Wednesday.
“It was last month the club denied paying for his flight to London – at a time when West Ham were looking at him as their next boss – but he is a figure that has been on their radar for a long time.
“Any managerial situation can change quickly so, at a time when it is the same names being circulated and most places playing down his chances, it might still be one to look out for emerging. Let’s be honest, it would make some sense.”
Following Pochettino’s recent departure by mutual consent, co-owner Todd Boehly and other key figures at Chelsea are keen to inject fresh energy into the club.
Their latest 2-1 win over Bournemouth, securing a sixth-place Premier League finish and a return to European competition, marks the end of one chapter and the start of another.
Although Amorim lacks Premier League experience, his impressive tenure at Sporting, including two Primeira Liga titles, has caught Chelsea’s attention.
However, Sporting are determined to retain their successful manager, posing a potential hurdle for the London club.
Jones mentioned that Chelsea’s hierarchy has been monitoring Amorim’s progress for a while, even though they have publicly denied any formal approach.
With a release clause of just under £9 million, negotiated down by Amorim’s representatives, Chelsea might soon enter discussions.
As Chelsea fans await the next chapter, Amorim’s name continues to resonate in conversations about the club’s future direction.
The coming weeks promise to be crucial as Chelsea look to rebuild and challenge for top honors once again.
