Danny Drinkwater regretted spending some of his best footballing years with Chelsea and didn’t particularly like his time there. Drinkwater, who is currently 34, signed his first professional deal with Manchester United in 2009 after starting his career in the Red Devils’ youth. He did, however, spend time on loan at Huddersfield, Cardiff, Watford, and Barnsley before making his first appearance for United.
In 2017, Drinkwater, like many of his teammates from Leicester’s heyday, was enticed by the chance to join a bigger club and transferred to Chelsea for £35 million in the hopes of helping the Stamford Bridge squad win the Premier League. With just 23 matches to his belt, his time at Chelsea was subpar. Before his five-year contract finished in 2022, he was loaned to Burnley, Aston Villa, Kasimpasa, and Reading.
Danny Drinkwater has revealed his regret over Chelsea transfer
However, in the realm of football transfers, Danny Drinkwater’s experience serves as a warning. Following his transfer to Chelsea, Drinkwater’s career took a turn for the worst after a successful five years at the King Power Stadium, where he celebrated winning the Championship and Premier League titles in an incredible two-year span.
He conveyed his relief at leaving Chelsea in an open interview with Sky Sports, saying, “It’s obvious that it wasn’t a situation that was good for me or the club.” Though not resentful, I am upset about how things transpired and how I was handled. It’s simply been a while. A common thought I have is, “What if I had stayed in Leicester?” What if my injuries hadn’t occurred? How might I have been treated differently by the club? Everything is so annoying. I still feel bad about it, but I can’t go back in time. I can only think about the future.
