Daniel Sturridge has stepped up in defense of Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson, following the club’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
The former England striker believes Jackson has been unfairly criticized by the media, despite the young striker showing promising signs for Chelsea this season.
Jackson, who was signed by the Blues for £31 million, has faced scrutiny for his goal-scoring output. However, Sturridge feels the media has been overly harsh in their judgment.
During a Sky Sports analysis, the ex-Liverpool and Chelsea star praised Jackson’s performance, particularly his movement and positioning within the team.
“Nicolas Jackson is crucial to Chelsea’s system,” Sturridge said.
“He’s capable of dropping into a false nine role and his finish against Liverpool was outstanding—calm, composed, and clinical in front of goal.”
While acknowledging that Jackson still has room for improvement, especially in his finishing, Sturridge emphasized that the young striker possesses the potential to reach the top tier of Premier League forwards.
“I’m not focused on his statistics. I’m looking at his overall play, and what he brings to the team is immense,” Sturridge added.
“It’s unfair to compare him to the likes of Drogba, Anelka, or Crespo—those are world-class names. Jackson needs time, and I think we’ve been too critical.”
In fact, Jackson’s contributions go beyond goals. His link-up play, particularly his progressive passing and shot-creating actions, has been superior to some of the league’s top strikers, including Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.
Sturridge pointed out that Jackson’s ability to contribute in open play is often overlooked.
For Chelsea fans, there is reason to be optimistic about Jackson’s development. With more time and the right support, Sturridge believes Jackson will continue to thrive in the Premier League and prove his doubters wrong.
