Diego Simeone made a strong effort to persuade Conor Gallagher to go to Spain, and the midfielder has already decided to sign a £33.7 million deal to join Atletico Madrid from Chelsea. With bonuses factored in, England international Gallagher is set to sign a five-year contract that could pay him up to £200,000 a week.

While on England duty during the Euros, Gallagher spoke with Kieran Trippier about life at Atletico before making plans to travel to Madrid on Monday to complete the move. Although the amount is much less than the £55 million, they paid Manchester United for Mason Mount, who also had a year left on his contract, in the summer, Chelsea preferred to sell Gallagher to a foreign team.

Romano confirms Blues midfielder agrees personal terms with La Liga Giants

There is only one year left on the midfielder’s Chelsea deal, so his future has been uncertain this summer. In response to Atletico’s interest, he turned down fresh terms last week because Gallagher wasn’t thrilled with the duration of the offer.

Chelsea accepted Atletico’s £34 million proposal, and Gallagher was given until Sunday to make a decision about his future. Furthermore, the midfielder has apparently reached a personal agreement with the dominant team in La Liga, according to Fabrizio Romano. The 24-year-old Gallagher is scheduled to travel to Spain today in order to complete his move and have additional discussions. However, as Gallagher is an Academy product, Chelsea will make a pure profit from his fee, and the sale would help balance the books.
