Cole Palmer’s breakthrough season for Chelsea has earned him the title of PFA Young Player of the Year. After a stellar season for the Blues following his transfer from Manchester City to Stamford Bridge, Palmer has won the award for the first time.
During the 2023–24 Premier League season, the 22-year-old assisted on 11 goals and scored 22 goals himself, making Erling Haaland the only player with more goals than the England international. Palmer, who made his way into the England squad for Euro 2024 by establishing himself as one of the league’s most dangerous players, registered the most goal involvements of any player in the Premier League.
Palmer wins the competition after being shortlisted alongside Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Michael Olise (Crystal Palace, now Bayern Munich), Joao Pedro (Brighton and Hove Albion), Alejandro Garnacho (Manchester United), and Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United).
How Cole Palmer went from schoolkid to superstar
Keith Fletcher was watching something extraordinary when he watched six-year-old Cole Palmer play with a ball at his feet. That moment will always stick in his memory. Manchester City veteran scout Fletcher remembers, “You could see he had something more than the other boys.” He was clearly the team’s best player.
His poise, his readiness to jump in and challenge others. After all these years, when I look at him, I can’t believe what he has accomplished. “Isn’t he a superstar?”
“I’m very happy for the young man,” Fletcher remarks. “It resembles watching an elderly Brazilian.” His assurance, his style of play, and his antics. He’s merely gotten stronger and stronger.
