Chelsea's Cole Palmer reflects on his first-team debut for England in Euro qualifiers

According to the Football Association, Cole Palmer has been selected as the 2023–24 England men’s Player of the Year. This was announced on Tuesday. The 22-year-old midfielder for Chelsea, Palmer, defeated the winners of the previous two editions, Arsenal striker Bukayo Saka, and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham, to become the preferred player of the Three Lions.

In November 2023, Palmer made his debut for England in a 2-0 victory over Malta at home. Since then, he has earned nine senior caps, made five appearances and scored twice during the Euro 2024 tournament. One of his goals occurred during the final loss to Spain in Berlin in July, when he assisted Ollie Watkins in the semifinal match against the Netherlands to score a late winner.

Cole Palmer won another award

In seven Premier League games this season, Palmer has scored six goals. Palmer is the first Chelsea player to receive the accolade since 2010 the year Ashley Cole, the current assistant coach of England, won it. Palmer has personally assisted in 44 league goals since moving from Manchester City to Chelsea last season (28 goals, 16 assists).

Harry Kane, his England teammate, has contributed more goals (53–41 goals, 12 assists) than any other player to be featured in Europe’s top five leagues over that period. Palmer is anticipated to start on Thursday when England plays Greece in the Nations League. Despite having talent like Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden, England manager Lee Carsley intends to make Cole Palmer a vital member of the national squad. Palmer is important to Carsley in terms of England’s future.
