AS Roma are closing in on the signing of Chelsea winger Tyrique George after holding positive talks with the player’s representatives in London.
Chelsea and Roma Negotiate Permanent Transfer for Winger Tyrique George
The Serie A club, managed by Gian Piero Gasperini, has made significant progress in negotiations for the 19-year-old academy graduate.
Chelsea are open to a permanent transfer for George, who is under contract until 2027 with an option for an additional year.
However, the Blues insist on including a “heavy sell-on clause” in the deal to protect their future interests.
The club’s demand for a sell-on clause and a buy-back option aligns with their strategy of retaining control over promising talents.
George’s potential departure follows Chelsea’s busy summer transfer window, which included signings like Jamie Gittens and the pursuit of Xavi Simons.
These arrivals have pushed George down the pecking order, limiting his first-team opportunities.
Despite making 26 appearances last season and contributing to Chelsea’s Conference League victory, the youngster was an unused substitute in their Premier League opener against Crystal Palace and left out of the squad for the West Ham United match.
Roma’s interest comes after their failed attempt to sign Jadon Sancho from Manchester United.
George, known for his dribbling skills and versatility on either wing, could join an attacking lineup featuring Paulo Dybala and Evan Martínez.
For Chelsea, selling George represents pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), aiding their financial compliance.
Meanwhile, the move offers George regular game time in a top European league, accelerating his development.
Discussions between the clubs continue, with Chelsea holding out for a deal that safeguards their long-term interests.
