Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham has claimed that Alejandro Garnacho made an error in leaving United for Chelsea, stating the winger “won’t be leaving for a better club” than the Red Devils.
“Disappointing”: Chelsea Star Told He Made Mistake With Summer Transfer Decision
The comments come as the 21-year-old Argentine seeks to establish himself at his new club after a £40 million summer transfer.
Sheringham expressed his doubts about the success of Garnacho’s move to West London.
While acknowledging Garnacho as a “very talented player,” he admitted he would not have advised the winger to make the switch.
“I think Alejandro Garnacho is a very talented player, but only time will tell whether he’s able to be a success at Chelsea,” Sheringham told Coin Poker.
“He made a big move in leaving Manchester United for Chelsea, and it’s not one I would have advised him to make if I were a part of his team.
When you’re at United you have to try your utmost to make it work. It is the biggest club in the world, so you won’t be leaving for a better club.”
Sheringham also suggested the nature of his departure might have permanently closed the door on a return to Old Trafford, especially given the reaction from the supporters.
Garnacho’s exit from Manchester United was set in motion after a falling out with head coach Ruben Amorim.
The situation escalated when Garnacho was left out of the starting line-up for last season’s Europa League final, after which he publicly questioned the decision. Amorim’s response was to tell the player to find a new club.
Garnacho has described his final months at United as “difficult,” noting there was a period where he was “just training alone”.
Despite the circumstances, he has held no grudges, stating, “I have nothing bad to say about the club, my old club Manchester United.
It was just a bad moment in life but now I’m very happy to be here.”
At Chelsea, Garnacho faces fierce competition for a starting spot. Recent analyses suggest he begins his career as a Blue on the bench, with Pedro Neto and summer signing Jamie Gittens currently preferred on the wings.
The Argentine is yet to score for his new team, though he has shown flashes of his potential in Champions League outings.
The move, however, was a key priority for Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who identified Garnacho as a left-winger capable of providing competition in the attack.
For a price of £40 million, the club believes it has secured a valuable long-term asset.
