If Thiago Silva wants to leave the team at the end of this season, Chelsea won’t stand in his way. Despite agreeing to a new one-year contract in February, Silva has been linked to a return to Fluminense, his old team in Brazil. Last year, he indicated his wish to complete his career there.
The 38-year-old criticised some of the decisions made by the new owners (Todd Boehly & co.) following a lacklustre performance against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinal. According to the article, both former Brazil striker Fred and Fluminense president Mario Bittencourt want the former AC Milan and Paris-Saint-Germain defender to return.
Given that Silva will still have a year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge if he decides to leave this summer, it’s unclear whether Chelsea would demand a fee for his transfer. In the previous three seasons, the veteran Blues defence has battled his advanced age to be the greatest. Given how much football this squad has played in the last 24 to 30 months, his availability has also been astounding.
The club did the right thing by not preventing the Brazilian from returning to his origins. He has sacrificed everything for Chelsea, and in 2021, he will win the Champions League. The return of Levi Colwill following his stellar loan stint at Brighton and Hove Albion could be the other factor. The Englishman might start the upcoming season at the back under the direction of new manager Mauricio Pochettino.
With his tenure at PSG, Milan, and other teams in addition to Chelsea, Thiago Silva has had a significant impact on European football. He is a legendary figure in the sport. We can only hope that he closes his career in the manner in which he desires.
