According to rumours, Chelsea wants Unai Emery to take Liam Rosenior’s place if they don’t make it to the Champions League. Rosenior has had a mixed start at Stamford Bridge after joining the Blues at the beginning of this year to replace Enzo Maresca.
Rosenior was a significant step up for the rookie manager when he joined Chelsea from fellow BlueCo-owned Strasbourg, but it is unclear if he is qualified for the position. Chelsea had won 10 of their past sixteen games under Rosenior, but they lost to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday and were eliminated from the Carabao Cup.
In the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 match, Chelsea lost 5-2 to the holders after letting up three goals in the last sixteen minutes. This dismal outcome has left them with a mountain to climb at Stamford Bridge. In recent months, Rosenior’s team has done well in the Premier League.
Chelsea may sack manager Liam Rosenior if the club fails to qualify
They are now in fifth place, three points behind Manchester United and Aston Villa, but according to a Spanish article, BlueCo “have no doubts” that they “will look for a new manager” if they don’t make it. According to the same story, Rosenior’s replacement is Aston Villa manager Emery, who is reportedly “increasingly likely to leave” the team before the upcoming season.
Even if the information in the Spanish story is probably inaccurate, Emery could believe that he has carried Villa as far as he can and seek a new challenge. However, they continue by stating that Emery has already had a “second meeting” on Rosenior’s replacement and has “requested” five moves, including two “non-negotiable” sales.
“Starting with a top-quality custodian who can solve the team’s problems,” the study continues. And Diogo Costa from Porto is the name they suggest. Lastly, the aforementioned media site claims that Emery would also ask to buy a top centre-back, with Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck being the preferred candidate. Additionally, Victor Osimhen meets the description of a striker who can average over 30 goals each season.
