Chelsea trigger extension on Giroud contract

Chelsea have reportedly triggered an extension on the contract on Olivier Giroud.

The Blues signed Giroud back in January 2018 from Arsenal and he has been more than useful in his two and a half year time at the club so far.

He was key under Conte’s last six months and helped Chelsea to an FA Cup. Next season, under Sarri, Giroud was the favored starter in Europa League. He not only top scored in the competition but also helped Chelsea win the tournament.

This season under the rule of Frank Lampard, Chelsea have done increasingly well. The rise of Tammy Abraham has been impressive. However, it has left Giroud back in the bench and with the Euros coming up, the forward was keen on leaving.

Chelsea blocked a transfer and it meant Giroud had to wait till June to get his desired move to Inter Milan. However, it now seems the Blues have triggered an extension on his contract that will watch him stay at the club for another year.

While it may be good for Chelsea to have a back up in Giroud, the player will no doubt hate the situation as it will further affect his chances of playing the Euros.
