Chelsea could bring Jeremie Frimpong to Stamford Bridge this summer, reuniting the Dutch full-back with his former Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso.
Chelsea Tipped to Reunite Jeremie Frimpong with Xabi Alonso in Summer Move
Frimpong joined Liverpool last summer in a £29.5 million deal. He arrived as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s replacement after the England international moved to Real Madrid.
However, injuries limited the Dutchman to just 12 Premier League starts in his first season on Merseyside.
Liverpool’s poor end to the campaign led to Arne Slot’s sacking. The club now brings in Andoni Iraola, which could create uncertainty for Frimpong as the Reds reshape their squad.
At Bayer Leverkusen, Frimpong thrived under Alonso. He played a key role at right wing-back when the club won its first-ever Bundesliga title.
Former Spain international Gaizka Mendieta believes a Chelsea move makes perfect sense.
“Jeremie Frimpong could be a good asset for Xabi Alonso at Chelsea,” Mendieta told Grosvenor Sport.
“Managers have players they trust from previous clubs, and there will be a belief from the player that they can find that form again.”
“We often see players reuniting with former coaches for that reason, especially if things aren’t going well for those players like Frimpong at Liverpool. It’s a way of getting them back to form.”
While Alonso officially starts at Chelsea on July 1, the club already prepares for potential high-profile exits. Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella have both raised doubts about their futures, with Spanish clubs reportedly interested.
However, Mendieta expects Cucurella to stay and thrive under Alonso.
“Cucurella will be a key player under Xabi Alonso,” he said.
“He plays with full-backs quite offensively. The full-backs at Leverkusen used to be quite prolific in attack, so that suits Cucurella.”
