Retired England midfielder Carlton Palmer has revealed he can ‘100%’ see Chelsea signing Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele during the summer.

Chelsea supporters were confident that the club would recruit a left back to replace the injured Ben Chilwell in January, but it appears that the club and the player were never on the same page.

According to reports, “early conversations” were undertaken with Ousmane Dembele’s agenct as it became evident that he would be leaving Barcelona, but it doesn’t appear that the France winger was ever really considered transferring this winter.

Chelsea chose not to pursue any of their targets at the mid point of the season after spending a club-record amount to bring Romelu Lukaku back to the club in August.

However, they might potentially be planning another significant signing for next season, with Dembele scheduled to become a free agent after the end of the 2021/22 season.

The France international was set to leave Camp Nou in January after the club’s director of football Mateu Alemany stated that if he is “not dedicated to Barca’s future project,” he “must go immediately.”

Barcelona’s attempts to persuade Dembele to sign a new contract fell through because the conditions given to him by the club’s management were lower than his existing £287,000-per-week contract.

Palmer believes that Dembele could still make the switch to Stamford Bridge, though, and claims the lure of the Premier League and the player’s relationship with Tuchel could be decisive factors.
