Chelsea have officially parted ways with Malang Sarr, as the defender completes his move to RC Lens. The 25-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Nice in 2020, has struggled to find his footing at Stamford Bridge, making only 21 appearances in four years.
Sarr, a former France youth international, spent much of his Chelsea tenure on loan, with stints at Porto and Monaco. Despite his promise and experience with France’s youth teams, he couldn’t cement his place in Chelsea’s first team.
Lens announced Sarr’s signing on Friday, with the defender agreeing to a two-year contract that includes an option for an additional season. This move offers Sarr a fresh start and a chance to revive his career in Ligue 1.
Chelsea’s statement on Saturday evening confirmed the mutual termination of Sarr’s contract.
“The Frenchman departs Stamford Bridge having made 21 appearances since joining in August 2020. Sarr spent time on loan at Porto and Monaco during his time at the club.
“We wish Malang all the best for the future.”
Sarr last played competitively for Chelsea in May 2022, making his departure less of a surprise to fans who had almost forgotten his presence in the squad.
His move to Lens signals a new beginning, and the French club will hope he can bring solidity to their defense.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s pre-season activities continue. They kicked off their US tour with a 2-2 draw against Wrexham in California and are set to face Celtic at Indiana’s Notre Dame Stadium.
The match against the Scottish champions, who recently defeated Manchester City 4-3, promises to be a thrilling encounter.
