Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca was full of praise for 18-year-old Josh Acheampong after the academy graduate delivered a standout performance in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace.

Pressed into action due to an ongoing defensive injury crisis, Acheampong made his senior debut and left a strong impression with his calm and composed display alongside Levi Colwill.
The teenager, who recently resolved a contract impasse with the club, was given the nod ahead of more experienced options like Axel Disasi and Tosin Adarabioyo.
His mature showing at the heart of Chelsea’s defense earned him glowing remarks from Maresca, who hailed him as the Blues’ best performer on the day.
“All of the players were good today, but if I had to choose one, it’s Josh,” Maresca said in his post-match press conference.
“Because of his age, because it was his first game, and because he was ready when we needed him. For me, he showed he can be a top player for this club.”
Maresca emphasized the importance of nurturing Acheampong’s talent carefully, stating:
“With young players, timing is everything. Today was his moment, and he delivered. Now, he just needs to keep working hard, stay grounded, and prepare for the next opportunity.”
The Blues initially seemed on course for a win after Cole Palmer opened the scoring in the 14th minute.
However, Chelsea’s inability to capitalize on their dominance came back to haunt them as Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta netted a late equalizer.
Reflecting on the result, Maresca attributed the draw to missed chances.
“The performance was strong, both on and off the ball. But in football, if you don’t finish your chances, you leave yourself open, and that’s what happened today,” he said.
Despite Chelsea’s recent dip in form—now winless in four league games—Maresca remains focused on the bigger picture.
“The table isn’t the priority right now. It’s about improving game by game,” he stated, hinting at potential moves in the January transfer window to bolster his squad.
Acheampong’s emergence offers a glimmer of hope for Chelsea fans, signaling that the club’s famed academy might yet play a key role in shaping their future.
