Chelsea to announce new head coach on Monday after contract signing

Nico Williams has made his transfer preference clear amidst growing interest from top clubs like Chelsea and Barcelona. The young Spanish winger has been a standout performer for Spain at Euro 2024, dazzling fans and scouts alike with his performance in the 4-1 victory over Georgia, where he contributed a goal and an assist.

Chelsea, keen to bolster their attacking options, made an approach through an intermediary, but they were met with a setback. According to Spanish outlet Sport, Williams prefers a move to Barcelona, a club he has admired for years.

Despite Barcelona’s financial difficulties, which might hinder their ability to meet Williams’ €55 million release clause, the player’s inclination remains unchanged.

Chelsea, however, are not backing down. They are willing to meet the release clause and offer Williams a signing bonus between €15 million and €20 million. The Blues are advised to remain patient, hoping that Barcelona’s financial constraints will play to their advantage.

Williams, currently under contract with Athletic Bilbao until 2027, has expressed his desire to stay focused on the Euros. “All the outside interest is good; it means I’m doing my job well,” he said. “I’m currently focused on the European Championship and will deal with transfer matters afterwards.”

His Spain teammate Yamine Lamal has been vocal about wanting Williams at Barcelona, highlighting their strong on-pitch chemistry.

Meanwhile, Athletic Bilbao’s president Jon Uriarte remains confident Williams is content in Bilbao, emphasizing the club’s commitment to building a competitive squad.

As the transfer window heats up, Chelsea fans will hope their club can sway Williams away from his Barcelona dream.
