Chelsea reportedly have set their sights on Juventus’ Matthijs de Ligt.
According to Italian news outlet, Tuttosport, Juventus were met with enquiries regarding the 21-year-old defender.
De Ligt was Juve’s start signing from 2019, arriving from Ajax for a hefty sum of €85 million. He was hailed as the next most prolific defensive talent but his transition has not been as smooth as expected. Thrown into the mix right from the start, De Ligt has taken a fair amount of time to adjust to Italian football.
He has luckily broken through under Andrea Pirlo and established himself as a regular now. Barcelona and plenty of other outfits were looking to whisk De Ligt away from Turin when his form initially started to falter. Chelsea were hoping to take advantage of the situation too but their efforts have been swat away.
Thomas Tuchel is looking to make improvements to his defence. While the likes of Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma, Antonio Rudiger and Thiago Silva have done the job till now, they are not viewed as long-standing candidates. Tuchel needs a more reliable and younger force in defence.
Now that De Ligt’s prospects have fizzled out, perhaps Chelsea could look into other targets like Sevilla’s Jules Kounde.
