Chelsea are reportedly preparing to strengthen their midfield options either in January or next summer, as injuries continue to trouble Enzo Maresca’s squad.
Chelsea Draw Up Midfield Shortlist: Wharton, Mainoo & Paz in the Frame

Despite the impressive form of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez this season, another setback for Romeo Lavia has forced the club to revisit the transfer market.
Lavia suffered a fresh injury in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw against Qarabag last week, lasting only a few minutes before being substituted.
The Belgian midfielder’s ongoing fitness issues have prompted the club to explore alternatives, with TEAMtalk reporting that three potential signings are under consideration.
Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton tops the shortlist after his strong performances since joining the Eagles.
The 20-year-old has drawn attention from several Premier League sides and even clubs abroad.
However, with Wharton under contract until 2028, Palace are unlikely to let him leave mid-season.
Chelsea have also shown interest in Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo, whose future at Old Trafford remains uncertain.
Under new boss Ruben Amorim, Mainoo has struggled for minutes, yet United are expected to resist selling or loaning him to a Premier League rival. A January move to Stamford Bridge, therefore, appears highly unlikely.
The third player on Chelsea’s radar is Como midfielder Nico Paz. The Argentine talent, thriving under Cesc Fabregas in Serie A, has impressed with four goals and four assists so far this season.
Paz’s creativity and attacking instinct make him an appealing option, even if he doesn’t fit the defensive profile of Lavia.
While Chelsea are expected to target just one of these midfielders, the club’s approach reflects their ongoing strategy of signing young players with high potential and resale value.
Whether a deal materialises in January or next summer will depend on availability and negotiations with their respective clubs.
