Josh Acheampong seems to fit in into the growing trend of modern football players who are difficult to classify. “Many elite clubs, including Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool, and Newcastle United, are closely monitoring his progress, impressed by his ability to operate effectively in multiple defensive roles,” according to CaughtOffside.

Acheampong, who is only 19 years old, is already being portrayed as a model for the modern defence, a football player who has been moulded by both natural skill and tactical need. He is said to be a “hybrid”, with the ability to switch between right-back and centre-back. In top football, this versatility is more of a need than a luxury.

“Liverpool and Newcastle United have also been linked with scouting activity surrounding the young defender,” according to CaughtOffside, indicating a developing interest rather than a passing observation.

However, there is a problem. According to reports, Chelsea considers the defender to be “untouchable”, a term that conveys ambiguity and purpose. Even the most firmly held opinions can soften in an era characterised by Financial Fair Play under the correct circumstances.

Chelsea could sell intriguing defender to Liverpool

The adolescent has a Chelsea contract that expires in the summer of 2029. In his 38 first-team games for the Blues thus far in his career, Acheampong has two goals. The England Under-21 international defender has made 24 appearances for Chelsea so far this season, scoring two goals.

Acheampong has played as a center defender this season; however, he has spent the majority of his time at right-back. Offers of €25–30 million “could test Chelsea’s resolve” to retain Acheampong, according to CaughtOffSide. It remains to be seen if Liverpool is prepared to pay that much.

We need to be a little wary right now because no other source is reporting on Liverpool’s interest in Acheampong. The adolescent pleased Enzo Maresca while the Italian was in charge of Chelsea, so it is not surprising that Liverpool has been linked to him.

In April 2025, Acheampong had an impact as a right-back, centre-back, and deep-lying midfielder against Legia Warsaw in the Conference League.
