Chelsea Reject Al-Ittihad’s Bid for Kepa Arrizabalaga
Chelsea have turned down a bid from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad for their world-record signing, Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Athletic’s David Ornstein reports that the Blues are still exploring options for the Spanish goalkeeper, who has just returned from a loan spell at Real Madrid.
Arrizabalaga, 29, had a mixed stint with the Spanish giants, making 20 appearances and contributing to their La Liga and Champions League triumphs. Despite his success in Spain, Chelsea are keen to offload him as he enters the final year of his contract.
The initial offer from Al-Ittihad did not meet Chelsea’s expectations, leading to its rejection. However, negotiations are ongoing, with Al-Ittihad and other clubs still in the picture.
Real Madrid remains a potential destination, especially with uncertainty surrounding Andriy Lunin’s contract renewal.
Back at Stamford Bridge, Kepa is training separately from the first team, highlighting Chelsea’s intention to secure a transfer. The Spanish international, signed for a staggering £71.6 million in 2018 from Athletic Bilbao, has had a tumultuous time in London. Despite winning the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup, he struggled to consistently impress.
Chelsea have bolstered their goalkeeping ranks with the arrivals of Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic. New manager Enzo Maresca appears to favor Sanchez as his starting goalkeeper for the upcoming season. Petrovic, who impressed when called upon last season, will provide strong competition.
As Chelsea navigate the transfer market, the future of Kepa Arrizabalaga remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: his time at Stamford Bridge is likely drawing to a close.
