Chelsea are reportedly preparing to formalize their interest in AC Milan’s star goalkeeper, Mike Maignan.

Chelsea Plot January Swoop for AC Milan’s Mike Maignan

According to reports from Spanish outlet Fichajes, the Blues are readying an official approach to sign the French international.

Maignan, 30, moved to AC Milan in 2021 after a title-winning campaign with LOSC Lille and immediately helped the Italian club secure the Serie A trophy in his first season.

He has since been a pivotal figure for the Rossoneri and has cemented his position as the first-choice goalkeeper for the French national team.

His future, however, is now a subject of intense speculation. With his current contract set to expire at the end of the season, Maignan is considering a new challenge away from the San Siro.

While AC Milan are eager to extend his stay and manager Massimiliano Allegri is actively trying to persuade him, the player appears open to a move.

Chelsea are now positioning themselves to capitalize on this situation. The report indicates the London club does not want to delay and is preparing a formal move, potentially as early as the January transfer window.

If Maignan’s contract remains unresolved, Chelsea could also seek a pre-contract agreement in the winter.

The potential acquisition addresses a clear need for Chelsea. Currently, the team relies on Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen, both of whom have shown a tendency for errors.

Maignan, a 6ft 3in goalkeeper renowned for his shot-stopping, brings a level of proven consistency.

After a dip in form last season, he has regained his top level this term, already keeping three clean sheets and demonstrating his prowess with a recent penalty save against AS Roma.

Valued at approximately £22 million, Maignan represents a potential bargain for Chelsea, who see him as a significant upgrade to solidify their defence as they continue to build a competitive squad.
