Chelsea are reportedly interested in SC Freiburg forward, Luca Waldschmidt.

The Sun claims that Frank Lampard has been monitoring Waldschmidt’s progress in the Bundesliga and is prepared to bid £20m for him.

His 2019/20 campaign begun in promising fashion but got disrupted by injuries, registering 6 goals in 16 appearances. The 23-year-old did finish the U21 European Championship last year as their highest goalscorer. He earned the nickname “II Bomber” which is in relation to German legend, Gerd Muller.

Waldschmidt has been so impressive that Joachim Low even handed him his debut for the senior German side. With three caps to his name, the forward has built up quite reputation for himself. Chelsea believe his talents could be further unleashed once he is taught how to use his physique.

Lampard has been eager to sign a striker since the start of the year. He was unable to secure a deal for any of his targets which meant Olivier Giroud’s exit plans had to be abandoned. The Frenchman’s deal is about to run out and Michy Batshuayi is incapable of scoring consistently, as proven time and time again.

Waldschmidt fits the type of players Lampard prefers – young, hungry and energetic. He could hand Tammy Abraham stiff competition upfront and possibly even improve Chelsea’s firepower upfront.
