Chelsea are reportedly preparing a move for Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado in the upcoming January transfer window as manager Enzo Maresca looks to strengthen his squad’s midfield options.

Chelsea Target Barcelona Midfielder Marc Casado in January Transfer Window

The Blues have been tracking the 22-year-old Spaniard closely and see him as a strong fit for their possession-based style of play.

The Premier League club currently sit fifth in the table with mixed form in recent weeks.

After impressive performances earlier in the season including a big win over Barcelona and a strong showing against Arsenal despite being a man down Chelsea have struggled for consistency.

They have failed to win their last three games in all competitions and now sit eight points behind league leaders Arsenal.

With the January window approaching, Chelsea are actively looking to add fresh faces to their midfield.

Despite already having players like Moisés Caicedo, Enzo Fernández, Romeo Lavia, Dario Essugo, and Andrey Santos, injuries have limited options.

Lavia’s fitness issues and Essugo’s long-term absence have forced Maresca to use full-backs like Malo Gusto and Reece James in central midfield roles — a stopgap the club hopes to avoid going forward.

Casado has struggled for regular minutes at Barcelona this season. With established stars such as Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, Fermin Lopez, and Dani Olmo ahead of him in the pecking order, his game time has been limited.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has preferred other midfield options, and Casado’s path to regular starts at Camp Nou appears blocked.

Chelsea believe Casado’s technical ability and comfort on the ball suit their tactical approach. The Spanish midfielder is valued at around £26 million, making him an attractive target for a club looking to balance quality with financial prudence.

While Barcelona may be reluctant to lose him mid-season, Casado could be tempted by the promise of more consistent playing time in England.

Chelsea’s pursuit of Casado adds to a growing transfer narrative this winter, with several clubs monitoring young talent across Europe.

Whether the move materialises will depend on negotiations between the two clubs and the player’s willingness to embrace a new challenge.
