Chelsea are actively planning to reinforce their leaky defence in the upcoming January transfer window by targeting FC Barcelona star Jules Kounde.

The Blues have endured a torrid start to the Xabi Alonso era, conceding 12 goals in their opening five Premier League fixtures the worst record in the division.

This defensive fragility was brutally exposed in a 3-0 humbling at Brentford, prompting intense criticism from pundits like Gary Neville, who described the backline as looking “all over the place.”

In response, Alonso has personally approved a move for Kounde. The Spanish manager views the French international as the ideal solution to bolster his options at right-back, especially with Malo Gusto’s future at Stamford Bridge remaining uncertain.

Barcelona appear willing to sanction a departure, as Kounde has slipped down the pecking order behind Eric Garcia and Joao Cancelo.

The 27-year-old, once lauded by Xavi as “one of the best defenders in the world,” reportedly welcomes a move to West London after coming close to joining the club in a previous window.

Kounde offers immense pedigree, having won three La Liga titles and made 47 Champions League appearances.

His versatility to play both right-back and centre-back makes him an attractive asset, while his consistency has drawn praise from current Barca boss Hansi Flick.

However, Chelsea face a fierce battle for his signature. Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Manchester City also monitor the situation.

Furthermore, Kounde’s substantial £257,000-a-week wage demands could complicate negotiations.

Despite these hurdles, Chelsea hope to finally secure a long-term target to fix their defensive woes.
