Chelsea have entered negotiations to sign highly-rated Wigan Athletic teenager Harrison Bettoni, with the attacking midfielder available as a free agent this summer.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke reports that Manchester City and AC Milan are also holding talks with the 18-year-old, setting up a three-way battle for his signature.

The player can leave the League One club for nothing, though Wigan would receive training compensation under football regulations.

Bettoni has already made 27 senior appearances for the Latics this season, scoring four goals.

His development has caught the attention of major European clubs, with former Wigan boss describing him as a “quality” attacking player.

Chelsea’s recruitment team continues to pursue promising young talent alongside established first-team targets.

Since BlueCo’s takeover in 2022, the club has consistently looked to sign emerging players before they break into senior football. Bettoni fits that profile perfectly.

An attacking midfielder by trade, the teenager would not immediately challenge for a first-team spot at Stamford Bridge.

Instead, Chelsea would likely integrate him into their youth structure, allowing him to develop before stepping up to senior level.

The competition, however, looks fierce. Manchester City’s academy has produced elite young players over the past decade, while AC Milan’s interest shows Bettoni’s reputation extends beyond England. Southampton have also previously tracked the youngster.

Bettoni’s availability as a free agent makes him an attractive market opportunity.

Chelsea can avoid paying a transfer fee for a player with significant long-term potential, though they would owe Wigan compensation for his development.

Xabi Alonso’s preparations for next season continue to intensify, and Chelsea expect a busy summer window.

Whether Bettoni becomes part of those plans depends on whether the Blues can win the race against two of Europe’s biggest clubs.
