Chelsea have poured cold water on speculation linking them with a shock move for free agent Georginio Wijnaldum, according to renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The 35-year-old Dutch midfielder had emerged as a potential emergency signing after Chelsea’s disastrous deadline day, during which they sold Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for £125 million without securing a replacement.
The Blues had agreed a deal with Monaco for Lamine Camara, but the Ligue 1 side dramatically pulled the plug at the eleventh hour, leaving the west London club furious and scrambling for alternatives.
Reports on Wednesday suggested Chelsea had contacted Wijnaldum about a potential return to the Premier League.
However, Romano swiftly moved to dismiss those claims, stating on X: “Chelsea will not sign Georginio Wijnaldum. Club currently playing down all reports about the Dutch midfielder”.
The decision comes despite mounting midfield concerns for Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso.
Moises Caicedo was forced off during Sunday’s clash with Brighton after coming on as a substitute, while Romeo Lavia has struggled with persistent fitness issues throughout his time at Stamford Bridge.
Veteran Jordan Henderson, signed as a free agent over the summer, is also currently sidelined.
Wijnaldum enjoyed five hugely successful seasons at Liverpool after joining from Newcastle United in 2016, making 237 appearances and helping the Reds win the Premier League and Champions League.
He left for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 and has since had spells with Roma and Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, departing the latter earlier this summer.
With the free agent market now closed to Chelsea, Alonso will likely have to rely on captain Reece James and new signing Valentin Barco to fill gaps in midfield during the coming weeks.
