Chelsea reignite pursuit of Elye Wahi after last summer’s failed bid

Chelsea have renewed their interest in Elye Wahi, aiming to bring the French striker to Stamford Bridge after a failed attempt last summer.

The Blues’ initial £24 million bid for Wahi, then at Montpellier, was turned down, leading to his eventual transfer to Lens in August.

Despite a solid debut season at Lens, where the 21-year-old netted 12 goals across all competitions, Wahi did not quite live up to the expectations set by his £30 million price tag. As the new season approaches, Chelsea’s interest in the promising forward has been rekindled.

Sources from L’Equipe reveal that Chelsea have approached Lens to inquire about Wahi’s availability and potential transfer fee. However, the London club is yet to place a formal offer.

Complicating matters, another unnamed club has reportedly made a more concrete move for the young striker, intensifying the competition for his signature.

Wahi, who signed a five-year contract with Lens, expressed his views on potential transfers last year. He revealed that he was closer to joining Frankfurt, which was seeking a replacement for PSG-bound Randal Kolo Muani, than Chelsea.

Reflecting on last year’s near move to Chelsea, Wahi told L’Equipe, “I didn’t want to go there just for the sake of it. Frankfurt was closer, more so than Chelsea. I spoke with the manager there. He speaks French and that was important for me.”

With Chelsea’s renewed interest, it remains to be seen if Wahi will finally make his way to Stamford Bridge or if another club will secure his talents.
