Fernandez was allegedly in line to be selected for the Olympics.
Olympics 2024 will kick off in July and Argentina will take part in it. Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez wanted to represent his country at the biggest carnival of sports in Paris.
The Blues midfielder has revealed that he “did everything possible” to represent Argentina at the 2024 Olympic Games. He has already won a World Cup in 2022 and was named as the young player of the tournament.
Enzo is currently in United States for Copa America 2024 and his side have qualified for the quarterfinals. The 23-year-old is hoping to add another trophy to his and his national team’s collection.
Fernandez was allegedly in line to be selected for the tournament. However, clubs have right to deny players from playing in non-FIFA-regulated tournaments so he will take part in pre-season camp for Chelsea.
While talking to TyC Sports, Fernandez has revealed that Maresca’s predecessor Mauricio Pochettino had given the green light for him to spend more time away.
He says: “I did everything possible. Mauricio (Pochettino) was at Chelsea before, he had given me the OK. Then, there was a change of coach and the club changed its position.
“I tried, I kept talking, I did everything possible to be there, but it wasn’t possible. I apologize to Masche (Javier Mascherano). I wanted to be there. It didn’t happen.”
Malo Gusto and Benoit Badiashile are also being forced to miss out from the Olympics. Chelsea wants his player to take rest ahead of the new season. Few players are already busy in Euro and Copa America.
