New Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has openly discussed having some “friction” with the club’s record signing, Joao Pedro, as he works to build a strong relationship with his squad.

Chelsea’s Rosenior on Pedro Partnership: “It’s Not About Being Best Friends”

Rosenior, who has made a strong start with an 83% win rate in his first six games, emphasized the importance of honest dialogue with his players.

He specifically pointed to his interactions with the £60 million forward as part of that process.

“At the moment, everyone will speak about João because his performances in the last two games have been superb,” Rosenior told Sky Sports Premier League.

“Not just me, my staff, we put a lot of time into getting to know the players and what makes them tick.”

The coach then revealed the dynamic nature of his talks with the Brazilian.

“I think me and João have had some interesting conversations so far, a bit of friction at times, which you need, and a little bit of love at the same time as well,” he admitted.

“I need that. I need them to tell me the truth.”

Rosenior’s approach champions direct communication over simply being a friend to the squad.

He encourages players to challenge him, fostering an environment where performance standards are clear.

“Everything I do, I don’t mind,” he stated.

“I’ve said to the players, I don’t mind you knocking my door down, asking me why am I not in the team? Why did you take me off? I want to have real conversations.”

The strategy appears effective for Pedro, who has shone recently with crucial goals, including a standout performance against Napoli. Rosenior credits the player’s response, noting his job is now to maintain that high level.

While creating a different atmosphere to his predecessor Enzo Maresca, Rosenior’s blend of tough love and openness aims to unlock Chelsea’s potential, starting with his most expensive talent.
