“That is a position we need to do something” – Maresca pushes for fresh reinforcements
Enzo Maresca has put the board on alert: Chelsea are still short in certain areas, and he’s demanding immediate reinforcements as the Club World Cup kicks off.
Following the signings of Liam Delap, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr — all part of the travelling squad in America — Maresca is keen to add quality ahead of the Premier League season.
With the transfer window reopening today, he installed fresh pressure on the club hierarchy by highlighting gaps in his squad.
Reports confirm that Chelsea had a €35 million bid rejected for Lazio centre-back Mario Gila — a clear signal that Maresca wants defensive solidity before the summer window shuts.
This comes on the back of previous links to Dean Huijsen of Bournemouth, as Chelsea look to bolster their centre-back ranks.
“More wingers, please”
In his pre-match press briefing ahead of tonight’s opener vs. LAFC, Maresca didn’t mince words. Jadon Sancho’s departure means the winger pool is thin.
“We have Noni [Madueke], Pedro [Neto] and Ty [George] only as the proper wingers so something for sure is going to happen…”.
With interest in Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens ongoing — despite a £42 million bid being turned down — the club is clearly hunting further attacking firepower.
Maresca’s vision extends beyond the current tournament. He views the Club World Cup as a testing ground for his evolving squad.
Already, Chelsea’s summer overhaul exceeds £100 million, including Delap, Essugo, Sarr, Estevao Willian, and Kendry Paez.
But Maresca is clear: while the hunger is there, ambition demands depth. Whether it’s rigidifying the backline or injecting pace and width out wide, the head coach insists Chelsea must act before the window closes.
