Despite a promising start to his tenure at Stamford Bridge, Maresca has faced challenges balancing his squad’s defensive and offensive capabilities.

The Italian coach, who joined Chelsea from Leicester City, has guided the Blues to fourth place in the Premier League with five wins from their first ten games.

Additionally, Chelsea has progressed to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals and maintained a perfect record in the Europa Conference League.

However, Maresca admits there’s one pressing issue he hasn’t resolved: how to effectively integrate Joao Felix, Christopher Nkunku, and Cole Palmer into the same lineup.

Joao Felix has managed just five Premier League appearances this season, while Nkunku has started only one league match.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Europa Conference League clash with Noah, Maresca expressed his regret, saying,

“I feel a shame for Joao and I would like to give him more minutes in the Premier League, but we need defensive balance and we cannot play with Joao, Cole [Palmer], and Christo [Nkunku].”

Maresca emphasized the need for a balanced approach, explaining that while he wishes to deploy all his attacking stars, defensive solidity remains crucial.

“I’d like to put all of them on the pitch but then you need to defend, and you need the right balance. I don’t have any doubts that if Joao keeps working well, he will find his moment in the Premier League,” he added.

Nkunku, who joined from RB Leipzig, has been particularly impressive in cup competitions, scoring eight goals this season.

However, his transition to the Premier League has been hindered by injury issues. Maresca highlighted Nkunku’s versatility and contributions, noting,

“Christo, every time he plays, he scores, and he does well. Also, he was probably our best player in pre-season, no doubt.”

Maresca’s challenge is to find a tactical solution that accommodates his attacking talent without compromising the team’s defensive structure.

As Chelsea prepares for their upcoming matches, including a significant clash against Arsenal, the manager may need to reshuffle his lineup to strike the right balance.

The Blues’ performance in these fixtures could provide crucial insights into Maresca’s ability to integrate his star players while maintaining the team’s overall stability and success.
