Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has expressed his disappointment over the situation surrounding young defender Josh Acheampong, who has refused to sign a new contract with the club.
Maresca Feels ‘Shame’ Over Chelsea Talent Acheampong’s Refusal to Sign New Deal
Acheampong, one of the brightest prospects to emerge from Chelsea’s famed Cobham academy, is currently in the middle of a contract standoff, which has left Maresca feeling “shame” over the teenager’s predicament.
The 18-year-old, whose current deal runs until 2026, is highly regarded within the club but has refused to extend his contract, despite Chelsea‘s clear intention to keep him.
Acheampong’s refusal has now left him sidelined from both the first team and development squad, prompting Maresca to question whether those advising the young defender have his best interests at heart.
“I feel a shame for Josh,” Maresca said.
“I spoke with him a few weeks ago, and it was a positive conversation. He has the potential to be an important player for Chelsea, but this contract situation is not helping him.”
Acheampong made his debut for Chelsea under former manager Mauricio Pochettino last season and has since attracted interest from top European clubs, including Liverpool and Real Madrid.
Maresca, who has been vocal about his desire to see Acheampong succeed at Chelsea, lamented the current situation.
“I really like Josh, and I would love to see him continue with us. But it’s a bad situation right now, and I don’t know if those advising him are doing what’s best for him,” Maresca added.
With Acheampong’s future still in limbo, Chelsea faces a tough decision in managing the contract standoff while hoping to avoid losing one of their top academy talents.
