According to the Telegraph, Chelsea have decided against bringing Gonzalo Higuain back on a permanent deal.
The 31-year-old was signed on loan from Juventus for a short period. He was handed major responsibilities by Maurizio Sarri but Higuain failed to impress, scoring just 5 goals in 17 outings.
Olivier Giroud kept on outperforming the Argentine, eventually, even getting chosen over him to play in the Europa League final against Arsenal. Chelsea won the match comfortably 4-1 with Giroud racking up one of his team’s goals.
With Sarri also out of the Stamford Bridge, Higuain has no backers at Chelsea. The Blues have been served a transfer ban which means that they can only sign players they had agreements with prior to the ruling – Matteo Kovacic and Higuain.
They are very close to finalising Kovacic’s trade from Real Madrid but have chosen against activating the centre-forward’s clause.
Most supporters might feel this is the right decision since Higuain tragically failed to impress them while collecting £270,000 paychecks every week.
Chelsea academy product, Tammy Abraham is on the rise after a promising season with Aston Villa and Michy Batshuayi has returned from his loan with Crystal Palace. With Giroud in the ranks, the Blues have enough firepower to ignore the prospects of the former Napoli man.
