Chelsea have approached Manchester City about signing versatile defender Rico Lewis, reigniting their strategy of targeting City’s academy talents.

Chelsea Enter Transfer Battle for Man City’s Versatile Star Rico Lewis

The Blues join Tottenham, Newcastle, and Aston Villa in pursuing the 20-year-old, who is also subject to a formal bid from Nottingham Forest.

Forest’s opening offer for Lewis was rejected, but negotiations continue as the Championship club remains confident of securing the player.

City values Lewis highly and included a buy-back clause in James McAtee’s recent £30m move to Forest, signaling their cautious approach to selling prospects.

This enquiry extends Chelsea’s established pattern under director Joe Shields, whose ties to City’s academy have fueled multiple transfers.

Recent signings include Jamie Gittens (£48.5m), Liam Delap (£30m), and Kendry Paez (£17m) – all former City youth products. Head coach Enzo Maresca, another ex-City staffer, further deepens the connection.

City responded by expressing interest in Chelsea’s 19-year-old defender Josh Acheampong. However, Maresca has blocked any move, prioritizing Acheampong’s development at Stamford Bridge amid defensive shortages caused by Levi Colwill’s injury.

Outgoing Focus: Chelsea seek sales before the September 1 deadline. Christopher Nkunku’s potential move to Bayern Munich remains active, while Nicolas Jackson attracts Premier League and Italian interest.

Window Dynamics: The club has already sold 10 players, including Noni Madueke (£53m to Arsenal) and Armando Broja (£20m to Burnley), funding new signings like Joao Pedro (£60m) and Jorrel Hato (£37m).

Lewis, capable at right-back or midfield, fits Chelsea’s profile for tactical flexibility. Yet City’s reluctance to strengthen a direct rival – compounded by Cole Palmer’s rise at Chelsea – complicates any deal.
