Players nowadays are very shrewd with their contracts, and they understand the power of bargaining when your agreement is coming to an end.

Of course, it’s a gamble, especially with a young athlete, risking career-altering or even career-ending injury on a low pay in the hopes of cashing in later.

That’s precisely what Birmingham defender Nico Gordon is doing, according to insiders with close ties to the club.

The emergence of numerous excellent younger players who have forced their way into the team over the last several months has been a significant plus for Blues.

Nico Gordon has been one of those, with the 19-year-old impressing in central defence despite being thrown into the deep end by Bowyer. Such form has piqued the interest of Chelsea, according to sources, who are considering a summer bid for the teenager.

He has a little more than a year left on his contract, and the top clubs are circling. The 19-year-old made his debut following the Covid break in 2020 and has already appeared in 10 Championship games, six of which have come this season.

Chelsea is said to have seen three of those games, but they have stiff competition — Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal are all cited as having an interest.
