Mike Maignan The Goalkeeper Chelsea Wants Over Jan Oblak

Chelsea are ready to pursue AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan with a pre-contract agreement in January, aiming to secure his services on a free transfer next summer.

Chelsea Prepare January Move for AC Milan Captain Mike Maignan

The club previously attempted to sign the French international during the June transfer window but failed to agree on a fee with Milan despite reaching broad terms with the player.

Sources confirm Chelsea view Maignan as an elite talent and believe he is “as good as anyone” in the world. The opportunity to acquire a player of his caliber without a transfer fee has significant appeal for the West London club.

Although Milan plan to reopen contract renewal talks in the coming weeks, Maignan has temporarily backed away from discussions to evaluate his future.

The appointment of Massimiliano Allegri as Milan’s head coach in July influenced Maignan’s decision not to push for a summer move.

Allegri immediately confirmed the 30-year-old as team captain, a move that cooled transfer talks and reinforced his importance to the squad. Despite this, Chelsea remain confident about securing his signature.

Current Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has faced criticism but recently received support from Peter Schmeichel, who called the scrutiny “unfair”.

Sanchez’s strong start to the season—including two clean sheets in his first three league matches—has provided temporary stability, but Chelsea’s interest in Maignan signals long-term planning.

With Maignan’s contract expiring in June 2026, Chelsea can formally approach him in January under FIFA regulations.

The club has already laid groundwork with personal terms earlier this year, positioning them favorably for a potential deal.
