Claude Makelele believes Chelsea are on the right path amidst ownership controversy.
The West London club are languishing 11th in the Premier League standings and are now struggling to even qualify for the Europa League.
They have spent an enormous amount of £600million over 16 new signings since a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over a year ago.
Chelsea are also on their third manager after the sackings of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter with club legend Frank Lampard returning as an interim manager.
Although this season has been a disappointment, ex-France midfielder Claude Makelele believes Chelsea could turn around their fortunes next season.
“Football is not easy. You can change [a lot of players] and put in a lot of money, but we see many examples where it takes a long time for clubs [to be successful],” Makelele said.
“I don’t think it is a negative [for Chelsea to have such a large squad], I think it’s positive because they can build a young team for the future.
“We need to give the new Chelsea owners time. In football, you know, there is no time, you need to be winning trophies straight away.
“But I think next year Chelsea will be ready to fight for the Premier League title.”
