Chelsea have yet to make a major signing this summer, but with the new season fast approaching, the Blues are stepping up their pursuit of AS Roma midfielder Manu Kone.

According to Italian outlet Corriere della Sera, Chelsea have held initial talks with Roma over a potential deal for the 25-year-old French international.
The negotiations reportedly gained traction during ongoing discussions between the two clubs regarding Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho, who could move in the opposite direction.
Manchester United have long been considered the frontrunners for Kone’s signature, having already signed midfielders Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans this window.
The Red Devils view the Frenchman as the ideal candidate to fill the void left by Casemiro.
However, Chelsea have now “accelerated plans” to hijack the deal, and reports indicate the Blues could “torpedo” United’s attempts.
Kone impressed at this summer’s World Cup, featuring in five of France’s seven matches.
The 6’1″ midfielder showcased his all-round quality demonstrating composure on the ball and defensive dominance between the lines.
Described as a “Hybrid 8,” he excels at balancing defensive work with ball progression and possesses the physicality to dominate both aerial and ground duels.
Roma are under financial pressure after UEFA recently fined the club €6 million for failing to comply with their settlement agreement.
The Giallorossi are reportedly willing to part with Kone for around €55-60 million (£47-51 million), having already rejected a €40 million bid from Atletico Madrid.
Under contract until 2029, Kone made 37 appearances for Roma last season, scoring twice and providing three assists.
For Chelsea, Kone would bring much-needed steel and athleticism to the midfield.
With Enzo Fernandez’s future uncertain and Romeo Lavia plagued by injuries, Xabi Alonso is eager to reinforce his options in the middle of the park.
The Frenchman’s ability to operate as both a box-to-box midfielder and a defensive screen would give the Spanish coach valuable tactical flexibility.
While Manchester United remain in pole position, Chelsea’s entry into the race ensures the battle for Kone will intensify in the coming days.
Neither club has submitted a formal offer yet, but with Roma’s financial needs and Kone’s desire for Premier League football, a resolution could come swiftly.
