Chelsea is prepared to let go of one of their best young players in order to acquire Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo. Notwithstanding rumors that Mainoo is looking to relocate overseas, the Blues are prepared to sell Romeo Lavia in order to pay for a move for the Manchester United adolescent.
The 19-year-old England international has been the target of Chelsea’s pursuit since the Red Devils’ unstable financial situation became apparent during the January transfer window.
A deal for Mainoo now appears more likely than ever. The Guardian reports that the homegrown wonderkid has turned down a contract offer from Manchester United and is considering whether to leave the team. It appears that he would prefer a challenge outside of the Premier League.
Chelsea is still planning to sign the midfield player, though, who has a contract that expires in 2027 and an estimated transfer value (ETV) of €54.8 million.
Chelsea is ready to intensify efforts to sign Kobbie Mainoo
Chelsea is now even more concerned as a result of Romeo Lavia’s injury issues. Following his £58 million transfer from Southampton in 2023, the Belgian has had a turbulent time, playing only 588 minutes overall because of a slew of ankle and muscular problems. Chelsea believes Mainoo would be a perfect addition to their midfield because of concerns about his durability.
Mainoo seems to prefer moving overseas, with Spain or Italy being viewed as more alluring locations, despite Chelsea’s growing interest. Chelsea might make a strong argument if they agree to his wage demands, but negotiations over a new contract have not yet been resolved. But Manchester United won’t likely let one of their best players go, especially to a direct Premier League opponent.
According to reports, the Red Devils made an offer of over £70 million for their academy product in January, and Chelsea was negotiating a deal with its Premier League rivals that ultimately fell through. Mainoo may still depart Manchester United this summer, though, according to a report from Caught Offside, which also claims Chelsea is “eyeing” the midfield player as they contemplate “selling” Romeo Lavia.
