Sky Italia confirm negotiations are currently ongoing between Napoli and Chelsea for Dries Mertens.
The forward is running out a contract with Napoli, hence, bringing in a lot of attention from other European outfits.
Many teams like Arsenal, Barcelona and Manchester United were reportedly pursuing a deal for the veteran this January. Fortunately, Chelsea have the upper hand in making a swoop.
Frank Lampard has already admitted that reinforcements are necessary and has even urged the Chelsea board to make signings this January. When asked about priorities, the Blues boss said, “In attacking areas, because we need to be more clinical.
“I wouldn’t say ‘a goalscorer’ but we need to be more clinical in the box in terms of our front line. When we attack and spend a lot of time around the opposition’s box, we have chipped in with some goals from midfield and have people who can arrive from midfield, but the broader reality is that we need more goals from the front line.”
If anything, Mertens definitely fits that bill of being a versatile forward with a solid goalscoring acumen. He can as an excellent backup, given his experience in the European top-flight. However, Sportitalia correspondent Alfredo Pedullà , also states a deal is nearly impossible to be struck before the transfer deadline.
