In an attempt to sort out their plans for a larger stadium, Chelsea has had discussions about vacating Stamford Bridge and relocating to Earl’s Court. Because it is so difficult to renovate the ground, the club is searching for a new location in west London. The owners view increasing the capacity from 40,343 as a top priority.
The real estate developer Delancey and one of the partners who maintains the Earl’s Court site, Transport for London, have been in discussions. In its master plan, which is scheduled to be presented to the councils of Hammersmith and Fulham and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea next week, the Earl’s Court Development Committee intends to construct a mixed-use development without a football stadium.
Chelsea could leave Stamford Bridge as Blues in talks over building new stadium
The Guardian reports that TfL, one of the partners now in charge of the facility, and Delancey have had “productive” discussions with Blues CEO Jason Gannon. Before coming on board in 2023, Gannon was managing director of SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
Redevelopment of Stamford Bridge is still an option; however, there have been rumours that this could push them into a six-year temporary residence. In October 2023, Chelsea and Stoll, a veteran housing provider, reached an agreement worth £80 million for Chelsea to acquire 1.2 acres of land next to the stadium.
