Chelsea’s turbulent season could take another significant turn, with the club reportedly identifying former midfielder Cesc Fabregas as a leading candidate to replace manager Liam Rosenior.
Chelsea Shortlist Fabregas as Rosenior’s Job Comes Under Scrutiny
The Blues enter a critical period following a four-match losing streak across all competitions.
Paris Saint-Germain eliminated them from the Champions League in the round of 16, and their hopes of securing a return to Europe’s elite competition now hang in the balance.
Rosenior has provided stability since replacing Enzo Maresca in January, but sources indicate the club’s hierarchy may deem a failure to qualify for the Champions League as grounds for another change in the dugout.
According to Caught Offside, Chelsea have shortlisted Fabregas, who currently manages Como, as a contingency should they decide to relieve Rosenior of his duties.
The Spanish coach enjoyed immense success during his playing career at Stamford Bridge, winning two Premier League titles, and now impresses in Serie A with his tactical acumen.
However, the Blues face stiff competition. Manchester City are also monitoring Fabregas closely, with Pep Guardiola’s long-term future at the Etihad Stadium remaining uncertain.
Fabregas brings a clear tactical identity that some feel Rosenior’s side currently lacks. At Como, the 38-year-old employs a disciplined system built on high pressing, vertical short passing, and fluid positional rotations, typically within a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 structure.
Observers often liken his style to the philosophies of his former mentors, Arsene Wenger and Guardiola, making him an exciting prospect for clubs seeking a modern, possession-based approach.
For now, Rosenior’s position remains safe through the end of the season. But with Chelsea’s form dipping and a crucial summer ahead, the club may face a difficult decision if results do not improve in the coming weeks.
