Gabriel Veiga of Celta Vigo is a highly sought-after midfielder, and Chelsea has entered the fray
With 11 goals and four assists in 36 league appearances, Veiga has been a notable performer for Celta this season, guiding the La Liga team to a mid-table finish. Numerous clubs in Europe are interested in the 21-year-old, including Newcastle United and Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid. Chelsea is now expressing interest in the teenager.
Celta has decided to let go of their academy product this summer, but they are determined the kid won’t depart unless his contract’s €40 million release clause is activated. Veiga rose through Celta’s youth ranks before making a name for himself in the starting lineup. Only club great Iago Aspas, who scored 12 goals, has scored more for the team this season than his outstanding total of goals.
Los Blancos preferred a player-plus-cash deal over matching his release clause, and Chelsea has now joined the battle to sign the Spaniard. Madrid was interested in his services but resisted matching his release clause. Following Kai Havertz’s declaration that he wanted to leave Stamford Bridge three years after his high-profile transfer from Bundesliga team Bayer Leverkusen, Chelsea showed interest in Veiga.
Madrid is apparently interested in signing the German forward this summer, despite his incredibly poor statistics in West London. Since joining Chelsea, the 23-year-old has experienced a roller coaster of a time. He won over the Blues fans after scoring the game-winning goal in the 2021 Champions League final, but his on-field performances haven’t exactly been stellar.
With 32 goals and 15 assists in 139 games for Chelsea, Havertz has fallen short of expectations. In 47 appearances in all competitions this season, the German only contributed ten goals. Chelsea’s bloated squad and pay cost will be relieved by Havertz’s likely exit, as the Blues want to strengthen a number of key positions in their team.
