Chelsea have interest on signing Real Sociedad midfielder

Midfielder Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad is a player in whom Chelsea has “registered their official interest.”

Following a succession of strong performances for his boyhood club, the 23-year-old is thought to be on the radar of many elite teams and could be the subject of considerable attention in January.

Recently, Phillips disclosed that Chelsea ‘had made touch’ with Zubimendi’s representation in an effort to improve Graham Potter’s alternatives in the engine room. Although another Premier League club Manchester United has been mentioned as a potential bidder for the Spain international, the Blues may face heavy competition for his services.

After a stellar start to the season for Sociedad, Erik ten Hag has expressed “concrete interest” in Zubimendi. The hard-hitting dynamo is rumoured to have a £56 million release clause in his contract, but if United did make a formal approach, they would try to negotiate that sum down.

However, because Zubimendi’s current deal is not set to expire until the summer of 2027, Chelsea and United might have to spend more to sign him.

In 114 appearances for Sociedad, defensive-minded midfielder Zubimendi has only contributed to eight goals. This season, the 5 foot 11 ace has led his colleagues in all categories, winning 2.4 aerial duels and averaging 0.9 interceptions and 0.6 blocks per league game.
