Brentford will only be able to demand between £15 million and £20 million for David Raya due to his contract situation

Chelsea are looking to make their squad formidable in January’s transfer window and they are showing an ‘interest’ in Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, journalist Simon Phillips has told GiveMeSport.

The Spain international is doing impressive goalkeeping for the Bees. He has been linked with a move to top Premier League clubs in recent weeks as a result.

The Telegraph has added that Raya is expected to leave Brentford at the end of the current season following the speculation surrounding his future.

The 27-year-old will see his contract expiring in 18 months. His wage at Brentford is £25,000-per-week contract, and Thomas Frank’s charges will surely be eager not to lose him on a free transfer.

It’s believed that Brentford will only be able to demand between £15 million and £20 million for the Spaniard due to his contract situation, meaning Chelsea, Man United or Tottenham could secure themselves a bargain.

Phillips has told GMS that Raya was ‘one of the names’ he was given when asking about Chelsea’s possible goalkeeper targets, so he is sure they are monitoring his situation.

He said: “I did an article probably about two or three weeks ago on goalkeepers because I was told at the time that Chelsea are not talking with (Edouard) Mendy at the moment about a new contract, and it is looking likely that he could be heading out in the summer.

“So, Chelsea had been making plans for goalkeepers for the last two or three months. And Raya was one of the names I was given when I first wrote that article, so I know that there’s interest.”

Raya has played a pivotal part in Brentford’s success in recent years, helping them claim promotion from the Championship in 2020/21 by keeping 17 clean sheets in 45 appearances.
