Chelsea plans to make an offer for Lyon right-back Malo Gusto to serve as Reece James’ backup in that position
The 19-year-old is wanted by the French team through the remainder of the current campaign. His employment there is scheduled to end in the summer of 2024.
Since the beginning of the summer transfer season, Todd Boehly and company have spent about £460 million on new players. They are eager to expand the team with more players.
They also have a known interest in acquiring a midfielder, in addition to a right back. Brighton and Hove Albion turned down the initial offer of £55 million for Moises Caicedo, and the team is now trying again to sign midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Benfica.
Since the beginning of the previous season, the 19-year-old has been one of the team’s regular starts. Since then, he has played in 45 league games, contributing to five goals. Gusto has a very similar background and personality to Reece James. The Frenchman, an athletic fullback, likes to run forward and make a difference in the final third of the field. He has good speed to make recovery runs and prevent opposing wingers from easily slipping by.
James has experienced injury problems over the past year, and Chelsea is trying to support and cover for him. There is a significant void left in the team when he is absent. Graham Potter could thus rotate the Englishman in and out of the side without much of a decrease in quality or profile thanks to Gusto’s arrival.
