Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic has expressed a strong interest in extending his stay at RC Strasbourg beyond the current season.
Djordje Petrovic: Staying at Strasbourg Could Be a ‘Very Good Option’
The 25-year-old Serbian international joined the Ligue 1 side on a season-long loan last summer and has since become an integral part of their squad.
Petrovic’s journey began when he signed with Chelsea from New England Revolution in August 2023.
Despite making 31 appearances in his debut season at Stamford Bridge, including a start in the Carabao Cup final, he found himself behind Robert Sanchez and new signing Filip Jorgensen in the pecking order under manager Enzo Maresca.
This led to his loan move to Strasbourg, a club also owned by Chelsea’s parent company, BlueCo.
Since arriving in France, Petrovic has showcased exceptional form, starting all but three of Strasbourg’s matches this season.
His performances have been so impressive that he equaled a club record that had stood for 41 years, underscoring his significant impact.
Reflecting on his development, Petrovic stated, “I’ve become a more complete goalkeeper than before I came to Strasbourg. The coach really encourages us to play with the ball and take risks.
It’s a lot of detail and concentration.” He added,
“I’m focused on finishing the season in the best possible way.
We’ll see what happens this summer. Staying could be a very good option if Strasbourg plays in the Champions League.”
Strasbourg’s head coach, Liam Rosenior, has praised Petrovic’s contributions, noting, “He has a lot more confidence now.
He’s more connected with the players on the pitch. He’s showing today that he’s a world-class goalkeeper.”
While Chelsea faces challenges with their current goalkeeping options, including Robert Sanchez’s inconsistent form, Petrovic’s potential return could bolster their squad.
However, the goalkeeper remains committed to his growth at Strasbourg, leaving his future open-ended as the season progresses.
