Chelsea’s young forward, Deivid Washington, is on the verge of rejoining his former club, Santos, on a loan deal set to last until June 2025.
Deivid Washington to rejoin Santos on Loan: Chelsea striker nears move
This move aims to provide the 19-year-old Brazilian with valuable first-team experience, which has been limited since his transfer to Stamford Bridge.
Washington’s journey began in Itumbiara, Goias, where he showcased his talent early on. He progressed through the youth systems of Gremio and Santos, making a significant impact in the Campeonato Brasileiro Sub-17.
His impressive performances led to a professional contract with Santos at just 16, featuring a notable R$100 million release clause.
In 2022, he emerged as the top scorer in the Campeonato Paulista Sub-17, netting 16 goals, and added six more in the national league of the same age category.
His consistent displays earned him a spot in Santos’ first team by April 2023, where he debuted in a Copa do Brasil match against Botafogo-SP.
He celebrated his first professional goal shortly after, contributing to a 3–0 victory over Bahia in May 2023.
In August 2023, Chelsea recognized Washington’s potential and secured his transfer for approximately £17.1 million (€20 million), offering him a seven-year contract.
However, breaking into Chelsea’s first team proved challenging; he made only three senior appearances, totaling 25 minutes, and spent most of his time with the Under-21 squad, where he scored ten goals in 18 matches.
The decision to loan Washington back to Santos is strategic, aiming to provide him with regular first-team action in a familiar environment.
This move is expected to aid his development and confidence, with Chelsea retaining the option to recall him in the summer.
Notably, upon his return to Santos, Washington will have the opportunity to play alongside Neymar, who recently made a high-profile return to the club after 12 years.
This reunion is anticipated to be mutually beneficial, offering Washington mentorship from one of Brazil’s most celebrated talents.
As Washington prepares for this new chapter, both Chelsea and Santos supporters are eager to witness his growth and contributions on the field.
This loan spell not only promises to enhance his skills but also strengthens the bond between the two clubs, fostering a collaborative approach to player development.
