There was no love loss when Juan Mata left Chelsea to join league rivals Manchester United because he was a huge favourite among the supporters. San Diego FC, an expansion team in Major League Soccer (MLS), announced on Wednesday that Juan Mata, a midfielder for Chelsea, has joined the team as a co-owner.

“Joining San Diego FC as a partner is an exciting opportunity to help build something truly special in a city and league that are experiencing incredible growth,” Mata, who currently plays for Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia and helped Spain win the 2010 World Cup, shared.

But now the 36-year-old has resorted to social media to declare that he will be investing in America’s newest top-flight team, which will become the league’s 30th club in 2025. “I am extremely pleased to announce that I am a partner at the newest and most unique franchise in the MLS!” read a statement posted on his Instagram.

The Spaniard has made history by becoming the first active player to acquire a stake in Major League Soccer, according to the club’s official announcement on the move. The club claims that Mata is now only the second foreign player to possess a share in MLS, joining Inter Miami owner David Beckham in the famous company.
