Christopher Nkunku’s dream move to Chelsea is quickly turning into a frustrating chapter for the French forward, who has struggled to find his footing under Enzo Maresca this season.

Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku urged to consider January exit

The 27-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2023 as one of Europe’s hottest prospects, boasting an impressive 58 goals in his final two seasons at RB Leipzig.

However, injuries and a lack of consistent opportunities have left his future at the club in doubt.

After a debut campaign marred by injuries, Nkunku managed just 14 appearances across all competitions last season. Now back to full fitness, expectations were high for him to make a significant impact.

Yet, he has started only three Premier League games this term, with Maresca favoring other options for his attack.

Despite being a regular in Chelsea’s cup competitions, Nkunku has struggled to fit into Maresca’s tactical system. Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy believes the Frenchman’s struggles stem from his undefined role in the squad.

“What is Nkunku’s best position? Is he a number ten? A left forward? He doesn’t fit as a number nine, and that’s left him caught between roles,” Cundy told talkSPORT.

Cundy emphasized that Nkunku’s inability to adapt to the central striker role dominated by Nicolas Jackson has left him on the periphery.

Instead, he urged Maresca to continue giving opportunities to young forward Marc Guiu, who has impressed with six goals in the Conference League this season.

“Guiu works hard, he’s quick, and he delivers. He’s simply a better fit for what Maresca wants from a striker,” Cundy added.

With interest from Barcelona and Manchester United reportedly brewing, Nkunku might have a lifeline if he decides to move on.

For a player of his talent, a fresh start could reignite his career and provide him with the platform he needs to shine.

Chelsea fans hoped Nkunku would bring a spark to Stamford Bridge, but as January approaches, it seems his future may lie elsewhere.

The clock is ticking for the Frenchman to decide whether to fight for his place or seek new pastures.
